Concerts, orchestras, dance · Chester and the North West · from £150

Live music, photographed from inside it.

Of everything I photograph, this is the part I would keep if I had to choose one.

Taking photos while people play music is one of the pleasures of my life, and after years as the photographer for a local orchestra I know where to stand and, more importantly, when not to move.

Concert photography is unforgiving. The light is whatever the venue decided, you cannot use flash, and the moment you want lasts a beat and a half. That is exactly what makes it interesting.

What I photograph

Orchestras and classical concerts

Rehearsals as well as performances. Rehearsals are often where the better photographs are, with the musicians absorbed and nobody watching.

Bands and live gigs

Small venues, stage light, the crowd included.

Dance and ballet

Studio rehearsals and performances. Movement photographed as movement, not frozen into a pose.

How I work

Quietly. I know where a photographer becomes a distraction on a concert floor, and I stay off it. No flash during performance, no stepping into sightlines, no shutter noise in the quiet passage before the finale.

For orchestras and choirs I’m happy to discuss ongoing arrangements rather than single evenings. Regular coverage builds an archive the group can actually use, for programmes, posters and social media.
